Family OK

Initial reports from my folks in Sugar Land, Texas, is that they have weathered Ike pretty well. Little or no damage or flooding in their area, which is fairly well inland (a SW suburb of Houston). And the aunt, uncle, and cousin who originally refused to evacuate DID evacuate, and are safe with my in-laws.

Thanks for all the good thoughts. Let’s hope Galveston wasn’t destroyed.

That would be the hope, yes. This whole thing is such a mess. I’m delighted your family is okay, though!

glad your family is well. we are all safe too!
wanted to comment on your words about rita. what a mess. we lived in north houston at the time and decided to evacuate. it took over 2 hours to go 5 miles. people were scared. out of their minds scared. it was primal out there on the road. so we turned around and prayed for our safety. the next morning we went out to pass out water and food to those that had been stranded from running out of gas. there were abandoned cars everywhere and people just walking. i will never forget that time. the humbleness that comes out of being spared, the fear of fellow humans, the ability to help others.

Mandi- That sounds just horrible. I do think the authorities did the right thing asking Houston and the western ‘burbs NOT to evacuate, for just those reasons.
