Update on Johnny’s and Monsanto

Ben Sturtevant, from Johnny’s Selected Seeds, updated the list of seeds they get from Monsanto/Seminis. They now only get 21 varieties of seed from the Evil Empire.

I really appreciate the work Johnny’s does to breed their own varieties, avoid GMOs, and help me avoid buying from Monsanto, and I want to share that information widely. I’m afraid they got a bad rap when Barbara Kingsolver mentioned that Johnny’s sells Monsanto seeds – I don’t think Johnny’s deserves to be boycotted entirely, so I’m trying to get all the facts out there.

Here’s the updated list to avoid, as of Jan. 4, 2009:

224 FREMONT cauliflower
240 HANSEL eggplant
241 GRETEL eggplant
568 BISCAYNE pepper
642 DULCE pepper
733 CELEBRITY tomatoes
2038 KING ARTHUR pepper
2063 BIG BEEF tomatoes
2212 PRIZEWINNER pumpkin
2260 FAIRY TALE eggplant
2309 X3R RED KNIGHT pepper
2365 ORANGE SMOOTHIE pumpkin
2368 PATTY GREEN TINT summer squash
2894 SERRANO DEL SOL pepper
2954 CHEDDAR cauliflower
2991 CANDY onion
122 BEAUFORT tomatoes
2794 GERONIMO tomatoes
2700 MAXIFORT tomatoes
2373 TRUST tomatoes

I realize Johnny’s got a bad rap from Barbara Kingsolver not clealy stating how many seeds from Monsanto they carry. But why carry any? It’s time to put our collective feet down and boycott all Monsanto products and companies that support Monsanto. That is Johnny’s dropped from my list if they don’t drop them all together. Why risk it? Why not take a clear stand against one of the most specious corporations on the face of the Earth? How can you support farmers, organic gardening and support Monsanto, a corporation that is making it its business to prosecute farmers, driving them out of business to establish world dominance over all seed availability? It’s time to say NO TO MONSANTO, and to any company that supports them.

Thank you so much for this article. I’ve been looking for some time for this information. You made my day. I was hoping I could pick Johnny’s for our plantings this year since they have just about everything in one place. I have decided to boycott Monsanto on our new homestead. We feel strongly about making our place self sufficient and supporting Monsanto (the anti-Christ of agriculture) just isn’t acceptable to us. This is very helpful

Try Fedco for your seeds. It’s a co-op, has chosen to NOT do business with Monsanto (read why here: http://www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds/monsanto.htm), and I find it far superior to Johnny’s. I also LOVE the Fedco catalog with all of its beautiful illustrations and parcels of very useful gardening tips and wisdom.
